Description:
Parenting can be stressful and parenting a child with additional needs can bring further stress and challenges for some parents. When we experience stress it directly affects how we feel, think and behave and negatively impacts our sense of wellbeing and overall health. Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure and these feelings can make it more difficult to deal with life’s daily challenges. We can often feel overwhelmed and unable to cope as stress compromises our daily functioning and as a result we feel emotionally and physically exhausted and unable to think clearly.
A lot of the stress we experience is driven by our thoughts and beliefs, because the way we think directly affects the way we feel. These unhelpful thinking patterns can be ongoing and intrude on all parts of our lives. They directly affect our mood and can preclude us from experiencing happiness and joy in our lives. It is this type of stress, driven by how we think, that will be the primary focus of these sessions.
As we re-think stress we will look at what stress is, how and why we become stressed, and how understanding and changing the way we think can help to reduce the levels of stress we experience, rediscover some joy and happiness in our lives and build emotional resilience.
A really important part of these sessions will be listening to parents by creating a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space where they can talk openly about their lived experiences. These will allow all parents to fully participate, learn from the experiences of others and understand that they are not alone on this journey.
